Twice Upon A Time

Twice Upon a Time is a premier resale establishment in Abilene, Texas which buys and sells new and gently-used maternity and children's items, from preemie to size 20. The company carries clothes, furniture, toys, strollers, high chairs, media, and a wide selection of handmade bows, sack dresses, flip-flops, beanies, and headbands. Each item has been carefully selected and priced, fitting most any budget.

History:

Twice Upon a Time has survived a number of changes and competitors. Formed in 1999, the original store was located at 701 Leggett in Abilene, Texas and moved to its current location a few years later. The original and still the best, Twice Upon a Time is Abilene's premier resale outlet for children's and maternity items.

Aaron and Misty Brown purchased Twice Upon a Time in April of 2009. Since then, the store has gone through many positive changes:

  • The hours have been expanded. The store is now open from 10 am until 6 pm, Monday through Saturday.
  • Fresh, new inventory has been and continues to be introduced.
  • A new logo has been created, focusing on fairy-tale/castle/prince and princess themes.
  • A new website was launched, providing helpful, yet easy-to-find information.
  • Additional staff members have been hired.
  • The store is now a true resale shop. Consignment options have been eliminated. All merchandise is purchased directly from the seller.
  • The physical location has been remodeled: New interior signs have been added; the building signs have been redone; the bathroom has been completely renovated; a larger mural has been added; and the windows have been repainted.
  • A "play area" has been added for younger children.
  • The store has joined the Abilene Chamber of Commerce.

More changes are planned, including:

  • The leasing of Announcement Storks and Announcement Yard Signs.
  • The addition of a second location.

We are excited and blessed to be a part of this wonderful time in the history of Twice Upon a Time!

Mission Statement:
By creating "win-win-win-win" situations, we will:

  • Provide the customer with low-cost, high-quality merchandise.
  • Provide the public with the opportunity to quickly and easily sell items which are no longer being used.
  • Grant the owners and employees with the ability to provide for their respective families.
  • Be a steward of God's provisions, furthering His kingdom by our actions, tithes, and offerings.

Reasons to Shop with Us:

Why shop with us? There are so many reasons:

  • SAVINGS: YOU CAN SAVE SO MUCH MONEY! Why pay retail?
  • CONVENIENCE:
    • We are a full-time establishment open 6 days a week, 52 weeks a year. We are only closed on Sundays and a few major holidays.
    • We have a play area for the smaller kids.
    • We have 2 dressing rooms.
    • We have a public restroom with a changing station.
    • We have ample parking. Our parking lot was recently re-sealed, re-coated, and re-striped.
    • We are conveniently located.
    • Most furniture is already assembled.
  • QUALITY, SELECTION, and CONFIDENCE:
    • All items are in "like new" condition. We DO NOT accept items which are too worn or those with spots, stains, odors (including smoke), or pet hair. All items are clean and in working condition. Items which require batteries have working batteries included. All buttons, snaps, zippers, etc. are functional.
    • We sell boys and girls clothes, sizes preemie to 20.
    • We sell maternity items.
    • We painstakingly make sure each item has been tested, and each item is functional and clean. For example, we open bedding bags to inspect each and every item inside. If an item has even the smallest stain or tear, we will not sell it.
    • We require those who sell to us to check for recalls, but we take it a step further: We also check to ensure each car seat, high chair, crib, toddler bed, changing table, armoire, walker, or stroller sold is not subject to a safety recall at the time of acceptance. If, at any time, we find an item is subject to a recall, it is removed from the sales floor.
    • We are a member of the Abilene Chamber of Commerce.

We are not a garage sale or a thrift store. We do not sell "play" clothes or hand-me-downs. The basic difference between Twice Upon a Time and a retail establishment in, say, the mall is that the retail store sells new items while we sell used items that look new.

You can truly shop with confidence!

How it works:

  • Call us to ensure we are taking inventory. We can be reached at 325-672-0455.
  • You can gather your items and bring them directly to the store. Pressed, clean, ready-to-go items will bring the best offers.
  • We will need time to review and inspect each item. We may need to do a search to determine if an item is subject to a recall. As such, please give us ample time to make the best offer possible.
  • Read the Guidelines below --

Guidelines for Selling Items to Twice Upon a Time

  • All items must be in "like new" condition; items which are too worn or those with spots, stains, odors (including smoke), or pet hair cannot be accepted. All items must be cleaned and in working condition.
  • Clothing items must be washed and "spot-checked." Items which require batteries must have fresh batteries included. All buttons, snaps, zippers, etc. must be functional.
  • All clothing items must be laid flat to be free of wrinkles.
  • We will process up to 4 tubs of merchandise at a time. If you have more than 4 tubs, please call us first to discuss.
  • We prefer to accept merchandise Monday through Friday.
  • If some items cannot be accepted, please advise if you wish to pick up these items. If you prefer, we can process them accordingly for you. We donate to various missions, charities, and other non-profit organizations.
  • We accept boys and girls clothes, sizes preemie to 20. We also accept maternity items.
  • Seasonal and out-of-season items are taken year-round. We accept Winter items in the Summer, etc.
  • We will pay you with a check or store credit. The store credit offer will be larger. It is also the best value.
  • We will need time to review and inspect each item. We may need to do a search to determine if an item is subject to a recall. As such, please give us ample time to make the best offer possible.
  • Due to storage considerations and limitations, you have 3 days to respond to an offer. If you have not (1) accepted the offer or (2) rejected the offer AND retrieved your items by the 3rd day, items will be considered abandoned and donated to the store.
  • We cannot accept:
    • ANY item which has been recalled. Check the US Consumer Product Safety Commission's website www.cpsc.gov.
    • Car Seats that are more than 5 (five) years old or car seats which have been in an accident.
    • ANY item with a garage sale/price sticker attached or an item with safety-pin holes.
    • Any drop-side/drop-down cribs or bassinets.
    • Items with your child's name written in them or on them, or giveaway/souvenir t-shirts.
    • Used underwear, panties, breast-feeding items, nipples, teething-toys, or pacifiers.
    • Games, etc, geared toward teenagers or adults, including "PG-13"; or "R"-rated movies or "M"-rated video games.

To Do or Not To Do:

  • DO launder your clothing items before presenting them. Clean all toys; polish furniture; press items if needed. Be sure each item is ready to be tagged and put on the shelf to be sold.
  • DON’T take it personally if we cannot accept an item. While we are very strict with what we can accept, please remember: our business is built upon accepting and selling as many items as possible.
  • DO tell your friends and family about Twice Upon a Time!

KEEP IN MIND:

  • We are not a garage sale or a thrift store. We do not sell "play" clothes or hand-me-downs. The basic difference between Twice Upon a Time and a retail store is that the retail store sells new items while we sell used items that look new.
  • If we purchase items from you directly, the store is making an upfront payment to you. The store is also taking all of the risk. If an item does not sell, the store will be left with non-saleable inventory.
  • You will make more money if you sell the items yourself (using eBay, garage sales, craigslist, etc). Yet,
  • Having a garage sale is work. You have to price and display the items, advertise, work a full weekend, worry about the weather, haggle with customers, watch total strangers hang around your house, and still mess with unsold items.
  • Selling your items online is work. You’ll take pictures, upload images, list all items, hassle with shipping, worry about payments, and if you sell via "local pick-up," will you feel comfortable with a stranger going to your house?
  • Your selling time is limited and temporary. Garage sales last one weekend. eBay listings typically last 7 days. A post on Craigslist gets lost as soon as other posts are made.
  • You can't get store credit anywhere else.
  • Your time and effort are worth something.
  • At the end of it all - after you have invested so much time, money, and energy - did you really make more money?

Tips to maximize your sales:

  • Clean, inviting items sell. Make SURE your items are in tip-top shape: Launder your clothing items before presenting them to us; clean all toys; polish furniture; press items if needed. In short, each item should be ready to be tagged and put on the shelf to be sold.
  • Place a hamper in your child’s closet for items your child has out-grown. Once the hamper is full, bring these items to Twice Upon a Time. Remember to include your bigger items like the crib, car seat, stroller, or swing.
  • Check US Consumer Product Safety Commission to make sure none of your items have been recalled. Items prone to recalls include, but are not limited to, car seats, high chairs, cribs, toddler beds, changing tables, desks, bouncy seats, jumpers, carriers, walkers, toys, and strollers.

We look forward to providing you with the fairest, most reasonable offer possible. By working together, we can ensure the integrity of Twice Upon a Time, which will only benefit you as a seller and a consumer. Thank you for your support. God Bless you and your growing family!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

  1. How often do you have sales? We have sales every single day we are open.
  1. What forms of payment do you accept? Currently, we accept checks (with a valid driver's license), cash, debit cards, credit cards, and store gift cards.
  1. Where are you located? Twice Upon a Time is located at 3656 N. 6th Street in Abilene, Texas. We are in a shopping center on the corner of Westwood and North 6th, between Leggett and Willis on the North side of Abilene. Ernesto's Restaurant and Cantina (formerly Dos Amigos Restaurant) is immediately east of our building, and the Communities of Abilene Federal Credit Union is directly across the street.
  1. What are your hours of operation? We are open from 10 am until 6 pm, Monday through Saturday and are closed Sunday for church and family time. Twice Upon a Time is open 6 days a week, 52 weeks a year.
  1. How do I sell my gently-used items through your store? Read the "How to Sell Items" tab and process your items accordingly. Call us to ensure we are taking inventory. We can be reached at 325-672-0455. We will pay you with a check or store credit via a store gift card. The choice is yours. The store credit offer will be larger. It is also the best value. We will need time to review and inspect each item. We may need to do a search to determine if an item is subject to a recall. As such, please give us ample time to make the best offer possible.
  1. I am ready to go: I understand how the process works, I've read the "How to Sell Items" tab, I've spot-checked all of my items, and I've taken them off the hangers. Do I need to schedule an appointment with you? Do you have certain delivery times? You can set up an appointment if you like, though no appointment is necessary and we have no set delivery times. However, please CALL us BEFORE you arrive to make sure you understand the process and to ensure we are accepting new inventory. Please also remember that Saturday is typically our busiest day of the week. As such, we do not accept items on Saturdays.
  1. Is there a fee or charge involved? No.
  1. Do I need to tag my own items or print my own labels? No.
  1. Do I need to price my items? No.
  1. I have quite a few items. Do I have to log every single one of them into your system? No. We review each item and make an offer to purchase the items.
  1. I am going to clean out my kid's closet. Should I wait and bring one large batch all at one time or should I bring a few smaller ones as I get them ready? Smaller is better. Smaller batches are easier for you to spot-check and easier for us to process. Let's face it: you are busy being a parent and you may not be able to clean out an entire closet in one setting. One other thought: It is better to clean out your closet several times a year instead of waiting for a massive clean-out once or twice a year. "Spring cleaning" can be overwhelming. Once a month is optimal.
  1. I see you use matching hangers. Do I still need to hang my clothing items? No. Just wash your items and lay them flat to avoid wrinkles.
  1. Do you have a limit on the number of items you can accept at one time? No, though processing 5+ tubs of merchandise can be time consuming and may delay the offer process. We accept most any kid's or maternity item, as long as it is fully functional and in "like-new" condition. There is really only one other consideration in this area: a stuffed animal does not sell well unless it is a certain character, like Elmo, Pooh, etc.
  1. Do you do "trade-ins" or offer store credit? Absolutely! We offer store credit as a payment option when we purchase your items. Getting store credit is yet another reason to clean out your closets more than once a year. You can essentially "trade" items which are too small for items which fit!
  1. This seems easy enough, but I think I will just have a garage sale or sell my items on "Craigslist" or "eBay". Is selling through Twice Upon a Time really a better option? Yes, for several reasons:
    • Having a garage sale is work. If you have a garage sale, you still have to hang your items. You also have to ask yourself many questions:
      • Do you want to take the time to put a price tag on each item?
      • Where will you get the price tags?
      • Do you have a clothing rack?
      • How will you display what you are selling?
      • Where will you advertise? (Remember: Advertising is essential but reduces your net profit).
      • Do you have a full weekend to devote to your sale?
      • What if it is too hot or too cold? Poor weather conditions can prove disastrous.
      • Do you want to haggle with your customers?
      • What are you going to do with your leftover items?
      • Lastly, do you want to have total strangers hanging around your house?
    • Selling your items online is work. If you sell them online, ask yourself:
      • How will you display what you are selling?
      • Do you have a camera and the ability to upload the images?
      • Do you have the time to list all of your items?
      • How will you ship what you've sold?
      • Who pays for the shipping?
      • Do you have shipping materials handy?
      • If you sell via "local pick-up" only, do you feel comfortable with a stranger going to your house?
    • Your selling time is limited and temporary. Garage sales last one weekend. eBay listings typically last 7 days. A post on Craigslist gets lost as soon as other posts are made. Twice Upon a Time is open 8 hours a day, 6 days a week, 52 weeks a year.
    • You can't get store credit anywhere else.
    • At the end of the sale - and after you have invested so much time, money, and energy - did you really make more money?
  1. What happens to items which cannot be sold through your store? We donate these items to several deserving missions, charities, and non-profit organizations.
  1. I know you cannot accept stained items, even those with the smallest of stains. I have several items which are more than "gently-used." If I bring them with my items in a separate bag, will you donate them for me? Absolutely! Processing donations is work on our part, but the end-result is worth the effort.
  1. I work for a local charity. Would you ever consider donating to us? Possibly. Please call us directly to discuss.
  1. You sell such cute handmade items. I, too, make handmade goodies. Can I sell them in your store? Possibly. Please call us directly to discuss.
